Centennial's Bulldogs soccer team competed in the Cup game on Tuesday October 15th at Dutch Clark Stadium against the Pueblo Central Wildcats.
The Bulldogs’ record going into the game was 5-7-1 and the Wildcats record was 6-5-2.
Looking at both teams' records, this match was going to be a very good game.
As soon as the first whistle was blown, the Bulldogs were going for the win. They had multiple plays that were close to getting them a goal but Central's goalkeeper, Leo Styduhar, was playing a very good game.
At half time it was still tied 0-0 and Coach Jeff Greenwood gave an inspirational speech on how the Bulldogs needed to execute better in the attack, stay disciplined defensively, and not get beat on a counter attack. This inspired his players to keep going to compete in the second half.
While the second half was just as competitive as the first, neither team was successful in scoring a goal, leaving the final score 0-0.
Athletic directors from both teams were called down to the field to discuss how they would determine which team would take the Cup home. The Athletic directors decided to go into five penalty kicks for each team.
For the penalty kicks, each team provided five players to alternate taking shots.
Goals were scored by seniors Alfredo Avila Soto, Israel Rojas Arreola, Irvin Prieto, and freshman Emir Prieto.
Keeper Joseph Pedraza saved one of the Wildcats shots and another went over the goal bringing the penalty kicks to an end. The Bulldogs won 4-3 and took the Cup home once again.
The Cup has been at Centennial for 25 years. The last time Central had the cup was in 1999.
