The Centennialight
The Pueblo Centennial Bulldogs recently held a homecoming football game at Earl Dutch Clark Stadium on Saturday 17, 2022 at 1 pm. Centennial was playing Cheyenne Mountain High School and fortunately, Centennial was able to spend the previous week with opportunities to show school spirit to lead up to the amazing turnout at the game.
Both teams had the same reputation- two wins and one loss. This created tension because it became immediately apparent that the two teams were experienced and either one could easily win. Unfortunately for both teams and fans, the weather was extremely hot sitting at almost 100 degrees Fahrenheit causing the field to also be very dry. The stands were filled with umbrellas and people looking for water.
Senior Blake Roberts, #14, ran for a 66 yard rushing touchdown and senior Tayton Montoya, #87, recovered from a fumble from Cheyenne Mountain in the first quarter. Because of these happenings and others, the Bulldogs scored a 14-0 by the end of the first quarter. Neither team scored in the second quarter, which left halftime to be the next attraction.
The Centennial Homecoming court, Dance Team, and Centennial Band thankfully distracted everyone from the heat. Although everyone had high hopes about Centennial winning the game, the Red-Tailed Hawks picked up their pace and won 16-14. The Bulldog team and fans were still trying to keep the game moving, but eventually the heat got to everybody. It became very obvious that the stamina was fading, and by fourth quarter the score stayed 16-14 causing the Bulldogs their second loss.
The Varsity Football Team unfortunately lost their following game against Discovery Canyon 24-21. The next big game is the Bell Game against Central High School, a rivalry going on since 1892.
